Bowls Mount Maunganui Update

More success for the Mount!

Firstly we had Nick Tomsett and Steve Beel playing in National Champion Champion Pairs held 8-10 August at Frankton Junction Bowling Club in Hamilton.

After dropping their first game in qualifying they were effectively in 'post section' very early. They then went on to win the next 3 games against some high quality opposition to qualify for the quarter finals on Saturday afternoon.

They were drawn to play a couple of young up and coming bowlers from Stokes Valley in Wellington, and after dropping a number early they got themselves back in the contest by the halfway point.

It was close from here until the last few ends where the Stokes Valley team, and eventual winners of the tournament, took control.

A very solid effort from the team making the club proud. This was one of the last times Nick would pull on the Mount shirt (for now) so it was awesome to have several club members make the trip over to Hamilton on both Friday and Saturday to support the team.

Onto the National Champion of Champion Triples held 22-24 August at Royal Oak and New Lynn Bowling clubs in Auckland for Nick's last hitout in a Mount Shirt.

The team of Nathan, Paul and Nick wanted to try and right the wrongs of a couple years earlier in the same event when it was a bronze medal.

All three of us played very well and each contributed as a team through the section play managing to win the first 3 games to qualify for the post section.

In an incredibly talented field only 6 teams managed the required 3 wins to qualify meaning 2 teams had a bye into the semifinal.

We were lucky enough to get a bye and played Bowls Hastings in the semi where we played exceptional bowls to make the final against the team of Peter Belliss from Aramoho.

The final, live on Sky Sport and Youtube, was an incredibly tight game with only 20 shots scored over the 18 ends played. Unfortunately we just feel short but a silver medal is an amazing achievement for not just us as players but also the club.

It was an awesome way to send Nick off to Nelson, even though we fell one agonising step short of the ultimate goal.

Myself, Paul, Nick and Steve would like to thank the club for all the support and messages we as players received during the champion of champion events.

A very special thanks to Nick, he will be missed both on and off the green. Not a bad way to retire the mount shirt with a silver medal (for now).
